Women in Manufacturing Scholarship

The MHSA has been granted the opportunity to offer a scholarship program to women in Manufacturing who would like to enhance their careers by completing the Manufacturing Safety Officer (MSO) designation or Manufacturing Safety Administrator (MSA) certification, who may not otherwise have the means to do so. This opportunity was granted to the MHSA as a creative sentence issued by the Crown Prosecutor from a serious incident that occurred in an Alberta workplace.

This scholarship is intended to:

• Help reduce the gender gap in the manufacturing industry

• Increase the number of women achieving their designation that may face financial hurdles encourage more women to pursue a career in safety

• Improve economic outcomes for women in Alberta by increasing their earning potential

• Provide an opportunity to develop knowledge and assist in protecting workplace wellbeing

If selected, the MSO/MSA Scholarship will reimburse the applicant for the costs incurred for the mandatory and elective courses, related materials, and exam fees, up to a maximum of $1700, that were participated in after the date of application. Applicants must provide proof of completion and costs incurred to be eligible for reimbursement from the MHSA.

For objectivity reasons, all interested parties will be required to complete this application and submit a written (or video recorded) explanation on how this scholarship opportunity would positively impact their life and help them to achieve their career goals.

• Minimum 3 years’ experience

• 11 compulsory courses

• 2 elective courses

• Safety proficiency review

Eligibility:

Due to the nature of the scholarship funding, recipients must meet the following criteria to apply:

• Applicants must be female (or identify as a female)

• Applicants will need to provide proof of completion and cost incurred to be eligible for reimbursement.

• Applicants will be given six months to complete the designation/certification of choice once their application is approved by the MHSA. In the event the applicant is unable to complete the designation/certification within the six month timeframe, they may apply for an additional six month extension.

• Applicants must reside and work within the Province of Alberta.

• Applicants must apply, complete the compulsory and elective course load through the MHSA, successfully complete a safety proficiency assessment and examination prior to receiving reimbursement.

• Applicants must submit, in writing or video format, how this sponsorship opportunity could positively impact their life and help them achieve their goals to mso@mhsa.ab.ca.

*Applicants that have already taken valid courses with the MHSA will only be reimbursed for the courses taken after this application date.
